Inspiring American: Bobby SmithBobby Smith is the perfect example of someone in excellent health. She always had been until the day she discovered a noticeable lump in her breast while in the shower. Finding the lump was the start of Bobby's battle with cancer. To say that it was a difficult time for her and her family is truly an understatement. After her surgery, it was the beginning of a long series of chemotherapy treatments that left Bobby bald, quite sick physically and in a dark place mentally. Bobby had always been a positive person so this was a difficult transition for her. She wasn't able to exercise or do very much for a good nine months. She was also concerned about her husband Dave, and two sons, Greg and Charlie having to deal with her cancer as well. With all the negative effects from this disease, Bobby came to realize that many more positive things were happening in her life. She was blessed with friends who were always there for her. Church families brought meals for the Smith family and continued to pray for Bobby's recovery. After Bobby's treatments, more surgeries and a recovery period, she often thought to herself, "If I could change things and go back in time and not have cancer, would I?" The answer continues to be a resounding, "NO." She would not have realized the kindness shown to her from friends and people she barely even knew! Bobby is now a cancer survivor of nine years and feels prepared to handle whatever comes her way. She is stronger and happier than ever in her life! She hopes that her story can help families or people that have to go through what she did. Bobby offers others hope and encouragement showing that no matter what painful experience you are facing in your life, there is always something good that can come from it, if you are willing to see the positive!
