Megan Herickhoff
Megan Herickhoff comes from a small tall town (population 750) called Belgrade in Minnesota. Megan felt she had a normal teenager life until she obtained her
driver's license. She always felt drowsy when she was behind the wheel. When Megan experienced a scary accident, her parents became concerned. Her parents took her to a
sleep doctor where she took part in a sleep study and subsequently was diagnosed with narcolepsy. That's when the puzzle pieces came together for Megan. She realized she
had become more and more isolated socially and her grades began to drop as well. Her diagnosis explained why she had felt so isolated and alone. She discovered
through treatment that this is often the experience of those who suffer with narcolepsy.
She has made it her lifelong mission to be a mentor and friend to other narcoleptics, especially teenagers. She started a support group in Minnesota for narcoleptics
with an open phone line (320-254-3636). She created a brochure that has been distributed National specifically for teenagers with narcolepsy. Megan has written articles
for the national magazine called, "The Network," which is a magazine put out by the Narcolepsy Network (a non-profit organization that Megan works for) to spread information
and help. She was inspired to do this work by her own doctor. He inspired her to be a voice for all so that everyone's quality of life can improve.
She realizes her journey has just begun. This seventeen year old has made a difference to help others who suffer with this disease. Her dedication, commitment and
passion for sharing this message of hope for other narcoleptics is her top priority: tired or not.
